Artist's Comments

Edit: I made some minor adjustments - smoothing out some parts that bugged me.

A drawing finished today from a photograph taken about a month ago.

I intended to create one self portrait a year, to mark the progression I make not only as an artist but also as a person.
I missed last year, but the link to 2006 is below.

Self Portrait 2006

Time: 3.5-5 hrs.
Medium: Graphite pencils.

As portraits go, this is about perfect. It's very tight and realistic without crossing the line into being mistaken for a photo. It is still clearly a drawing, which makes it very satisfying to look at. The model is very pretty, the pose and composition easy to apprehend. It's neither in-your-face intrusive, nor is it possible not to pause and look at the pleasant, subtle gaze. We don't care who the model is. That is: our interest doesn't rest in it being a celebrity, it rests in the integrity and appeal of the image in front of us.

If an image is too strong and grabs you hard at first you often become tired of it really soon. If it's too bland and unassuming it disappears and you don't notice it again. This one strikes me as something that is perfectly balanced between the extremes and would last very long framed and hung on someone's wall. It has a very successful concordance of model, pose, expression and rendering.

Thank you very much for this comment. I much prefer these kinds of thoughtful appraisals than the multitudes of one-liners (even if they're 100% positive) one can get on here. It's nice to know that some of the decisions I make as a young artist do amount to decisions well-made. As a young artist, many of the choices I make are really through series of trial and error, having to find my 'right' way of doings things by stumbling on them. Without having someone to guide, it does make art more of a mystery a little difficult to unravel, but with comments like yours, things are worth the effort and patience again. :)

Anyway, thank you once again for the time you took to comment! :)
